A brief history of skateboarding and caps

by Torsten Ritscher on May 16, 2020
Skateboarders like to wear Flexfit caps because they look great and are very practical, but how did that start?

Skateboards have been around since the 1940s. They were primarily used by California surfers who wanted to be active when the sea conditions were unsuitable for surfing.

In 1976 California suffered a severe drought when homeowners had to drain their swimming pools. People who love to skate decided to convert these empty swimming pools into miniature skate parks. Then they started building concrete skate parks to cope with the growing number of skaters.

Professional skateboarders soon began to emerge, earning prize money from competitions and sponsorship deals.

In the 1980s, skaters went beyond the skate park and just rode on quiet streets. They used street furniture like railings, walls and steps as places for stunts and tricks.

Skate clothes
Clothing is very important for skateboarders. You can skate in most athletic apparel, but skaters want more fashionable and fancy clothes. They prefer streetwear - loose clothing inspired by sportswear that allows them to move around freely and that is adorned with distinctive designs and logos. The baseball-style cap is the headgear of choice for skateboarders. A helmet may be more practical for a sport where falls are common, but many skaters prefer the Flexfit cap.

Snapback caps keep the face shaded and the head protected from the harsh sun. Sweatbands keep your head cool and dry. They fit snugly and comfortably and won't fall off when doing skateboarding tricks.

Skateboarding has spread well beyond California and can be seen all over the world. Flexfit snapbacks are worn by enthusiasts in every country where there are skaters. Some skaters wear bare Flexfit caps, but most like to wear custom caps that have a logo or snappy slogan printed or embroidered on them.

Flexfit caps can be found at major retailers and sportswear stores, but skateboarders like to congregate in specialty skateboard stores that sell clothing designed for skateboarding. These stores sell bespoke Flexfit snapback caps that feature the brands and logos of board manufacturers and other brands aimed at the skate community.
